lego tape

legotape

I’m keeping an eye on this campaign for lego tapes, officially called nimuno or toy block tapes. It looks superduper fun, a tape that can stick on anything and then add lego bricks. I particularly like the tape around the bottom of sneakers, because why not. It’s one of those things that have absolutely no use whatsoever except for entertainment value.

They’ve reached almost $1.5mm funding. Right now for US$13 we get 2 rolls and for US$36 one roll each of different 6 colours: green, blue, purple, black, red, grey. The campaign has 20 days to go. I’ll wait till almost to the end because they seem to be constantly adding colours.

#handwritingday

bbhandwritingday

Apparently 23-jan is national handwriting day, which coincides with John Hancock’s birthday. This artificial special day was invented by Moleskine, who wants people to

free yourself from your QWERTY keyboard and write out a social media post by hand

and tag it appropriately, of course. People can go to certain moleskine stores, handwrite a post and get a free notebook.

I made a font from my own handwriting, which I sometimes use for fun. So that’s my #handwritingday post.

plague

Originally mm and I were supposed to meet up for lunch, but we decided to postpone because of the poor weather. Instead, I spent the whole day playing plague. I’d played a free copycat, infection, and decided to spend 0.99 on the better original. The aim is to infect and kill the entire earth population before a cure is found. The plagues progress from bacteria to bio weapon and within each plague category are different difficulty levels. The trick is to figure out the best way to win: infect everyone with low grade symptoms first; go for lethal symptoms quickly; transmit the disease through air, insects, blood; which country to infect first; how to deal with difficult-to-infect countries. Lots of possible strategies with different outcomes.

What makes it addictive is the seemingly endless possibilities, and each game can be finished in about 15-20mins. It’s a world domination sim game that makes you think, and the game has even attracted the attention of people at the CDC, who invited the developer to visit and talk about the game,

as a tool to teach the public about outbreaks and disease transmission because of how it uses a non-traditional route to raise public awareness on epidemiology, disease transmission, and diseases/pandemic information

plague01

The game was released in 2012 and has been downloaded millions of times, so I’m way behind the curve. I working my way through the standard plague types, hopefully the special types will unlock without needing to pay.

plague02

There are also many achievements to earn, which affects strategy. Combinations of symptoms, killing everybody under 365 days, cause a nuclear meltdown are just a few of the achievements.

plague03

Random popups give news or are important hints to get achievements. The Olympics get cancelled, then reinstated, and people in the UK are infected. Apple$oft (snerk) introduces iCure. Victory isn’t always guaranteed either. One advantage of coming to a well-established game late is the number of tips and cheats posted. Lots more hours of play until I get bored.

#83: kayak, stand up board

kayak004boardbb

Task #83 of 101.1001 are 3 activities with family. This is 3 of 3.

Sis invited me to go on an outing at the beach today. My niece had a playdate with one of her school friends to go kayaking. Very easy, rent a kayak or stand up board from the people at the beach, that was it. No need for life jackets, although we thought we should have been offered the option. The part of the beach was quiet and not very deep anyway.

I tried both kayaking and stand up boarding, both for the first time. The light kayak was very easy to handle, and I went out past the parked fishing boats to one of the buoy markers. I was a bit wary of the stand up board, starting off sitting and paddling around, but after a while I found courage to first kneel then stand up. Took more concentration than sitting in the kayak, trying to keep balance.

Great fun. Only around £5 for an hour, and we could swap between kayak and stand up board as we wished. I think it may be a new activity, will try to get mm to come with me next time.

candy floss flower

Came across videos of vendors making pretty candyfloss flowers. Worth watching till the end to see the final product. Enough for at least two people I think.

17circusday

When we think of candyfloss, it’s just a lump of spun sugar served on a stick or in a bag. That someone thought of such a creative way of repackaging a favourite product, it’s great.

check out wall climbing course

Organic Wall
flickr / steve oliver

I called the YMCA about their indoor climbing wall. For anyone to use it, they must show that they are competent by being a member of a climbing club, or having gotten a certification from the YMCA themselves. The introductory course is on tuesday evening or saturday afternoon, for 3 hours, and very reasonably priced.

When I was very young, I loved climbing on rocks and stuff. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at wall climbing. I hope I have enough upper body strength for it, but apparently it’s leg strength and coordination. I’m okay with leg strength—at least what I’ve built up whilst running. My only reservation is the current state of my wrist; my left wrist has always been problematic and it’s been swollen with sudden sharp pain for a couple of weeks. The pain manifests in certain situations and positions like taking the laundry from the washing machine, or doing bentover rows. Seems to be fine when gripping.

Anyway, I have the details now.

instagram temp tattoos #picattoo

picattoo

I bought a box of boomf marshmallows for my niece’s birthday last year and she was so pleased with it that she still hasn’t opened the box. The idea is to order 9 marshmallows on the boomf website based on 9 instagram pics; or 9 marshmallows from the same instagram pic; or a composite of 9 marshmallows from one instagram pic.

Anyway, the idea is to link instagram with products. Nothing new, we’ve been able to order all sorts of products from cups to caps to calendars from pics for ages.

The newest fun thing to do with instagram is via Rotterdam-based picattoo. For $15 including worldwide shipping we get 12 temporary tattoos sourced from instagram. Lots of potential fun for these cute tattoos, or even useful for marketing. Interesting.

#randomflickr fun with @pixelsorter

praha122charlesriver

Another #randomflickr, this one was taken in Prague oct-2011. Pretty autumn colours along the river vitava from the end of charles bridge.

An article on quartz talked about twitter bots. An interesting one is pixelsorter which

sorts the rows (or optionally columns) of an image according to a specific method like hue, red, brightness, luma, etc

Just tweet @pixelsorter and attach an image. It’s a bit like playing with the multitude of filters on photoshop.

There are also a few preset commands which give other results. This is the effect using preset[triphop]. Pretty cool. I love discovering quirky pointless stuff like this.

lego awesome

Lots of cool lego stuff lately.

  • amazing lego machine that I can’t stop watching, and want to be there to personally follow that tiny blue ball around the room.

  • full sized lego car powered by compressed air

  • trailer for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug in lego

  • the upcoming lego movie

  • lego star wars on the iphone

  • the 50 US states represented by typical (stereotypical?) lego figures, available as individual prints, here’s New Mexico and Iowa

    lego50nm lego50iowa

  • lego scavenger hunt at CERN, where the smart scientists hid a bunch of lego figurines including aliens, a werewolf, a gorilla, a leprechaun, a pharaoh, a skater and a skier prior to google street view showing up

sea monkeys

While my niece is away on holiday, I’m taking care of her sea monkeys. I have no idea what they are, and had never heard of them before. Taking care is easy, feed them every other day and that’s it. They are apparently tiny brine shrimps, but some people think they’re from Mars. Heehee.

24-105mm coffee mug

cameralensmug

I know I’m trying to cut down on junk but seriously, I have to have this!! Aptly found in the awesomeness section is this coffee mug that looks exactly like a EF 24-105mm lens, which is what I use as the standard on my EOS. Just read the photojojo people gush about it:

It’s equipped with a lens-cap lid (omg), rubber-grip focus and zoom rings (o…m…g), and an auto-focus switch that actually switches

There’s also this canon dial decal for the mbp, and other cool stuff on that site. I love how they explain that they have canon and nikon dial decals:

because we know there are two types of people in this world: those that brake for Nikons and those that don’t let friends buy one

SNERK.

ski 3

The weather was nice so I went skiing again. I know wilmot well now. Got there just before noon, got my boots and skis and was on the slopes in no time. Systematically worked my way left to right, alternating between State Line and Fanny Hill (blue and black) before lunch and then Exhibition and Snow Bowl after lunch. I think Snow Bowl is the most difficult, it gets fast and steep in places.

Begun to get tired by 3pm. This time I feel my arms and legs getting a good workout, I was working harder today, going faster and trying very hard to stick to parallel. Now I’m sad cos I’m not sure if I’ll get a chance to go again this season. 🙁

2009 ridiculousness in auto tune

Who would have thought a year ago that a technology that corrects pitch which allows singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without the need of singing in tune would be the source of so.much.fun.

Here, in no particular order are: balloon boy, Kanye vs Taylor, Obama vs fly, Jon vs Kate, octomom, Sully, amongst others — in autotune. I can’t get that stupid tune out of my head, that’s because it’s pitch perfect. snerk.

chicago in a day

brunchannsather

My friend RM is here for work, but he came over early to stay with me over the weekend. I picked him up from the airport yesterday, we took it easy last night — I made lamb chops and we walked around Clark for a bit after dinner.

It was a glorious day today. We started by going to ann sather for brunch. It’s a beautiful restaurant with local European feel and good food. We were quite greedy, hehe. Between us we had crabcake eggs benedict, cheesecake panini french toast and sides of bacon, sausage, applesauce and hash brown. Extremely full but very very tasty.

I drove into town, parked at Millenium Park. Visited the bean, the Loop, Sears Tower (but didn’t go up), Michigan Ave, the Apple Store of course. There are a variety of tours we could have chosen — the hop-on hop-off trolleybus, the architectural boat cruise — but we were both excited to go on the segway tour.

I’d seen people on segways before, it’s pretty common in chicago, but never tried it myself. oh boy, was it absolutely fun!!! It took no time to get familiarised, and accelerating, stopping and steering were very intuitive. The tour was 2.5hrs, and we went all the way from the top of millenium park to the museum campus, northerly island, soldier field and back. I’d say for every visitor I’m getting from now on will get a recommendation for these.

hunch

I’ve been playing with hunch, a new startup from Caterina Fake that

helps you make decisions and gets smarter the more you use it

What is it? It’s a “decision engine” — I ask it a question, it asks me several related questions, then it gives me answers based on my answers. There’s also a big list of 70+ questions that i can answer that educates hunch about me.

So far, hunch has told me I should get the iPhone 3GS and not the Palm Pre (like, duh); that if I were to visit London I should stay at the Blake; and that I should try deep water aerobics as a fitness program. The last one is, well, pretty inaccurate — and I get a chance to disagree. It’s still a work in progress, there are not so many questions, but it’s fun.

flat stanley

neena07bean neena16cta

I did flat stanley for my niece this week. flat stanley is inspired by the children’s book by Jeff Brown. Poor Stanley got squashed and became flat as pancake. Undeterred, Stanley takes advantage of his flat state to go on many adventures around the world and even to space.

Many schools initiate Flat Stanley Projects in which children make their own Flat Stanleys, and take him to activities with them for a few days. They record the activities in a journal. Then the fun part starts:

Flat Stanley and the journal are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time.

So my niece’s flat doll, whom she named Flat Neena, has been making the journeys. She’s been to her grandparents in West Sussex, and our cousin in New York so far. And this week she was with me. I took her to Sears Tower, the Arts Institute, the Bean, downtown, and on a ride on the brown line. She’s now on her way back to my niece. It’s been really fun.

if you were a band, this would be your first album cover

Here’s another set of facebook memes. #9. tagged by Sera.

If you were in a band, this would be your first album cover. Directions:

  1. Go to a wikipedia random page — the title is the name of your band
  2. Go to random quotes — the first 5 words from the last quote is the title of your first album
  3. Go to flickr’s last 7 days interesting page — select a photo for your album cover
  4. Using photoshop or a similar program, put it all together
  5. Post and tag friends you want to join in.

That was FUN!!!! I got an award winning cinematographer as band name, the last words of captain Lawrence Oates (1880-1912) as album name, and picked a picture of an abandoned room as cover. Which I played around in photoshop, of course.

Total 28, of which most were required reading at school. Those I like I put more than one (+) and of the ones I haven’t read, I intend to finish the Potters, that’s it. I wanted to read Atonement, but after seeing the film, not so much.

I tried to look for the origin, and I think the meme grew from a 2003 search for the nation’s favourite books that resulted in the Big Read. When i said grew, there are post-2003 books in this list, so perhaps it’s morphed.

quiz: web 2.0 logos

web2logos

via techcrunch, a neat little web 2.0 game — try to recognise as many web 2.0 sites by their logos. Some are instantly recognisable, but some are more tricky and some i’ve never heard of. And in true web 2.0 fashion, the site is facebook connect enabled.

i got 23/34, which is as many as i could have expected.

great food debates

memes, love them or hate them. This, like the omnivore 100 and vegetarian 100 from last week, from accidental hedonist. Not so much a meme as a collection of the most common “which?” food debates.

  • Coke or Pepsi: coke. coke. coke. diet coke and lately, coke zero

horoscope

mm avidly follows the horoscopes while I generally give them a cursory glance if I come across them. This was on my igoogle today:

Just as you were getting accustomed to the hectic pace, everything changes. You wake up in a quieter and gentler world today — and it’s not just because it’s the weekend. Instead of charging ahead, think about taking some time off and doing absolutely nothing at all. It might sound boring, but it might be just what you need.

Oh my. That’s a tough case to build for not believing.

stupid

The newest feed in my greader, the daily wtf, a story about…stupidity.

This morning, I had to deal with one of our HR secretaries, and it was déjà vu.

When I first started to work for this place I was in HR. I had passed my interviews and was doing paperwork as part of the hiring process. The HR secretary and I had the following conversation:

Her: Can I have the phone number of the consulting company where you worked for the past 6 years?
Me: I was self employed. I am the owner and sole employee of the consulting company and I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
Her: No, I need to call to verify!
Me: …But you’ll just be calling me.
Her: I have to call — what’s the number?
Me: The number of the office is [my cell number].
(note: I’m standing 2 feet directly in front of her. She dials the phone and I answer.)
Her: Hello — this is Paula from Initrode Global, calling in reference to Snoofle’s employment.
Me (both into the cell phone and to her): I know, I’m standing right in front of you.
Her (into the phone): Could you please verify the dates of Snoofle’s employment at VirtuDyne, Intelligenuity and Initech?
Me (reading from my résumé that is laying on her desk in front of her): VirtuDyne: a1 to b1, Intelligenuity: a2 to b2, and Initech: a3 to b3.
Her: Great, thank you! *click*
Me (directly to her): …Did you not notice that you were talking to me right here in front of you?
Her: I know, but I have to call to check these things.

At this point I walked away, wondering if the rest of the company would be just as WTF-y.

no post today

In the spirit of bb,

No BBtv today, we’re slacking off

there’s no real post today, I’m slacking off. What? If boingboing can do it, and they are the directory of wonderful things remember, so can I. No lolcat-cute picture of a band of kittens, here’s a picture of the outdoor spa area at the Marriott Mumbai.

cheese fight

ncheeseaa
For just over a month, Sars and Keckler has been running a cheese showdown contest on tomato nation they call NCheeseAA. They started with pairs of cheese and asked for readers’ votes. There were the more familiar like brie and cheddar; and more obscure (for me) like mimolette and ossau-iraty.

And now it’s down to the final two. Mozzarella vs British Cheddar. I do appreciate that they specify it’s the British version, cos it is the best. Looks like there’s an overwhelming vote for it, and both hosts agree in their assessments.

Sars says: I have nothing against mozzarella, except that it’s not a cheese that can really stand on its own: to shine, it needs to go on something, or in something, or with something. British Cheddar, by contrast, is a great snack with an apple; goes great on veggie chili; and is delicious all by its lonesome.

Keckler says: I want Cheddar.

Me, I voted for Cheddar too.

my steamed and punked mind

The strangeness that is my mind. I saw the periodic table poster on thinkgeek and my first thought was: “I wonder if someone can make a steampunk version.” I guess it’s the greenish grey background.

I find it not an exact science to define steampunk. It’s science; it’s fantasy; it’s history; it’s animation; it’s an attitude and a mood. It’s Jules Verne and laputa and Firefly.

tech cartoons

I hate chain and forwarded joke emails with a vengeance. I’m afraid to say that any friend or acquaintance who sends me these will themselves vastly marked down in my opinion of them. If I can get away with it, I usually tell them never to send me such emails ever again. Why am I so rude?

  1. It’s a waste of my time to have to read and delete the email
  2. I don’t want my details to end up in some spammer’s email box — I have no control over the action of the other people on the recipient list

So anyway I got one of these emails from an ex-colleague today. I was less stressed about it cos it came to my work mailbox. Some of it was actually funny. But I will practice what I preach and not forward to anyone. Instead I’ll post them here.

a couple of random links

Here’s a couple of links I’d saved during thing-a-day month.

how glasses affect your image — via digg, how adding glasses seriously affect how one is viewed.

Danish police don’t know no iMac — via boing boing, the police visited this blogger’s home accusing him of using a stolen credit card to buy stuff online. He explained he has an open wifi connection. That’s not the funny part.

We moved into my roommate’s room.
She has an original iMac.
“We have your roommate’s permission to confiscate her computer,” the Ichabod Crane one said.
“Whatever,” I said. They had already assured me that we would get our laptops back that afternoon, so I figured the damage had already been done. Ichabod started rooting around under her desk.
“Where’s the computer?” he said.
“On the desk. That’s the computer,” I said.
“No, the computer.”
“That’s the computer, dude.”
“That’s the screen.” He had lapsed into the voice you use when you explain to your 6-year-old cousin how the toaster works. “I mean the compuuuuuter. Understand?”
“Dude. That’s the whole computer. Right there. The blue object the size of an armadillo.”
“No. Where the daaaaata goes. The computer part.”
“That is the computer. For Hell!” Danish swear words aren’t as satisfying.
“So that’s the entire computer, right there?”
I was standing there with a look on my face like I was watching a dog walk on its hind legs.
“New technology, huh?” he said.

Remember, the original iMac came out in 1999.

day 21: giant robots are coming!

bionicle toys

Why yes, I know that bionicles are meant for 7-16 year olds and I’m … not 7-16. But I got these, and they were fun to make!!! The blue one is Takadox and the red one is Kalmah. Hee.

I photoshopped them against a vaguely threatening robot computer evil face background I found on google images. The shadows are photoshopped too.
